Sechelt Seniors  Centre
"Pre-choreographed Ballroom Dance" OR
A new beginner class is being offered in Gibsons in September.  To sign up, please call Parks and Recreation: 604-886-6865.  The Round dancing offered at the Senior's Hall in September will be for those who have already taken beginner lessons. It's a fun, easy way to learn waltz and Two Step!  A cuer tells the couples what steps to do as they go along, which takes the pressure off leading and following.  Dances are pre-choreographed with a variety of steps that flow from one to the next.  Round dancing skills make ordinary social ballroom dancing easier and more fun too!
ROUND DANCING
Monday night pre-choreographed ballroom lessons, put on by the Square and Round Dance Club, have been ongoing at the Senior's Center for many years already.  They were set up originally for square dancers who wanted to learn the pre-choreographed ballroom dances we do (in addition to squares) on Wednesday evenings.

Hi Dancers!

We hope y'all are having a great summer!  With September hoving into view, here are our start dates:

The Country Stars Square and Round Dance Club dances Wednesday evenings at the Senior's Hall in Sechelt starting September 17th, 7:30 - 9:30 PM.  Announcements will be at approximately 8:30, refreshments (tea, etc) will be available throughout the evening.  We will be needing Club members to take turns doing hall clean up (sweeping the floor, putting away refreshment supplies and folding up the tables) at 9:30.

Parks and Recreation is hosting our square and round beginner lessons.  The square dance lessons begin Tuesday September 23rd 7:00 - 9:00 PM.  The Round Dance lessons (marketed as "Two Step and Waltz Lessons") start Thursday September 25th 7:30 - 9:00 PM (excluding October 9th).  Both programs are at the new Gibsons Recreation Centre in the dance studio.  They will be listed in the Parks and Recreation flyer that comes out at the end of the summer.  If you or someone you know would like to start dancing, please register in advance to ensure that the class proceeds.

Intermediate round dancing (for those who already have the basics) is at the Senior's Hall in Sechelt starting Monday September 23rd, 7:30 - 9:00 PM (excluding Thanksgiving Monday). We will offer Phase II Two Step and Waltz; and some Phase III Waltz, Rumba, Foxtrot, Jive and Cha Cha... according to the wishes of those in attendance.  In order to avoid raising Club fees, the Executive has decided to charge a user fee of $5/person/evening at the door, ($3 instructor fee, $2 hall rent).  Although attendance is on a drop-in basis, we require advance notice from a minimum of 4 couples.  So please let us know before the 23rd, if you plan to be there.

Club fees are NOT being raised this year.  (Cheering!) After analysing the finances in detail with a spread sheet and putting together a budget, we are leaving the fee at $110/person for the year.  We are continuing with the half price fee for those over 80 this year.  (Three cheers for healthy, active longevity!)  Not only are the fees NOT being raised, we have eliminated the Convenor levy of 25 cents.  (more cheering!)

We looked for a fair way to also eliminate the $2 hall rental fee at the door, without success.  (Ah well, you win some, you lose some.)  So, we will continue paying $2/person at the door Wednesdays when attendance is taken for insurance purposes.

By popular demand, we are offering a $10/dance/person rate for those who would prefer a pay-as-you-go option.  Anyone choosing this option is still required to pay their Seniors Centre membership ($20.00) and Federation insurance ($10) at their first dance.

For the fall season, the Executive and our Caller have decided to classify our Club: "Mainstream with Plus teach", which more accurately describes what we are doing at this point.  We are now considering everyone as full members as soon as they begin attending Wednesday evening dances.  Completion of Plus level is no longer required.  In January, if some new dancers have completed Basic with Ken's Parks and Recreation lessons, we plan to further broaden our classification to "Multi-level: Basic, Mainstream and Plus".

Deborah and Gerry
"Round dance" is a great way to learn ballroom dance moves because it is pre-choreographed with a cuer who guides couples smoothly through the dance to the music.  It helps couples learn and practice a pleasing variety of moves; takes the pressure off the man to lead and the woman to follow.  Many couples find it easier to learn to ballroom dance this way!
"Round" Dance is done in ballroom dance rhythms: (smooth) fox trot, waltz, two step, (Latin) rumba, cha cha, mambo, tango and even jive!  The Country Stars Square and Round Dance Club has mostly done a variety of Waltzes and Two Steps, although interest is growing in the Latin rhythms and jive.  For more information, please call Deborah and Gerry at 604-886-2675.
